Welcome to Ascent 121 Media, the place for YOU – the entirely capable, but maxed-out entrepreneur – to find solutions to your most pressing website problems.
Once upon a time, as a Coxswain in the United States Coast Guard, I drove 47’ Motor Life Boats. My mission: risk my life to rescue mariners at the mercy of violent seas and carry them out of harm’s way to safety.
I didn’t set out to drive boats when I initially joined the Coast Guard. My goals were two fold: indulge my love of all things nautical while training to be a journalist in their Public Affairs program. Desiring to be a writer from the time I was young, this seemed a logical choice for my adventurous soul.
My love of adventure and challenge won out over logic as it happened. It only took one rescue mission at my first assignment, a small boat station on Puget Sound, and I was hooked. On the eve of reporting for journalism school, I changed course and began training to become a Coxswain, learning to drive small boats on all manner of rescue missions.
Navigating treacherous waters and violent storms in the Pacific Northwest was difficult in the extreme at times. Encountering frigid temperatures, towering waves, and blinding fog tested my limits time and time again.
Commanding a vessel on dangerous missions took strength, fortitude, smarts, and a whole lot of guts. It was one of the most challenging and terrifying things I have ever done. And, one of the most fun and rewarding!
I LOVED every minute of it.
In fact, I might still be in the Coast Guard, if not for finding an even greater passion in a new role – motherhood. Devotion for my new family prompted my decision to leave the military lifestyle behind to pursue a greater calling.
A New Career Direction
Not wanting to sacrifice time with my children for my career, I determined to do work I loved from home and create a flexible lifestyle around my family.
Writing was a natural fit for both my talents and my entrepreneurial aspirations. I completed my education, earning a BA in English with an emphasis in writing for the web. Soon after, I landed a freelance writing gig for the New York Times company, About.com, as their Guide to Powerboating. Boosted by this success, and having a ton of fun using my boating experience to help others, I set out to grow my freelance writing business.
Launching this business is how I discovered a love of web design. I had a zero budget for hiring a web designer, and plenty of DIY bravado. Diving into WordPress, coding, CSS, and graphic design, learning it all as I went, I created my own website. And became intimately acquainted with website shame.
I worked hours upon hours, but I never reached the point where I was satisfied with the design of my website. I tweaked it here and there, then switched design directions several times. I finally gave up and called it “good enough for now.” I never came to the point of feeling comfortable sending people to my website, and I know I missed out on more than one lucrative opportunity because I felt I needed to revamp it before I pursued a hot new lead.
The experience of building my own website was a blessing in disguise. I loved web design so much, I began creating websites for friends and family at first, and later for paying clients. I had finally found the perfect marriage of my twin talents – writing and design.
Knowing I needed better skills training to turn my hobby into a thriving business, I completed another degree in Digital Design and Business. With all my skills, talent, experience and training coming together in perfect unity, I relaunched my business as Ascent 121 Media.
A New Adventure
Until I became an entrepreneur, I believed my time in the Coast Guard was the most exciting adventure I would ever live. In reality, being an entrepreneur closely resembles my time in the Coast Guard. It can be treacherous, difficult, and test my limits. It definitely takes smarts and a whole lot of guts, too. In fact, I’d have to say, launching Ascent 121 Media is not only fun, but truly the greatest adventure yet.
Except this time, I’m on a rescue mission of a different sort.
Instead of rescuing helpless mariners, I throw a lifeline to maxed-out entrepreneurs drowning in website problems that stymie their business’ growth. Through my unique approach to web design, my clients walk away from our time together with a website they love, and the confidence that their investment will reap dividends of more time, less frustration, and greater business success for years to come.
